Fire Safety - Kitchen Fire Safety

One area in your home where you spend a lot of time dealing with fire and flammable materials is in your own kitchen. A fire can break out at any time because cooking requires the use of oils and fats. These are all flammable. You can avoid the outbreak of a fire if you follow some simple fire safety tips.

One of the most basic rules to observe in the kitchen is to NEVER leave the stove unattended. This is one of the main reasons that kitchen fires occur. Always stay with your cooking until finished and all stove eyes and ovens are turned off. Cooking should be enjoyable, not a fire hazard! Also, when cooking, be sure to keep flammable materials, such as oven mitts, and kitchen towels well away from lit burners. It doesn't take much for a small fire to get out of hand, so always practice good fire safety when cooking.

Another basic rule to follow in your kitchen area is to never leave appliances plugged in when not in use. Appliances still receive an electrical current while plugged in and makes them a hazard for starting an electrical fire. Take that couple of seconds to unplug the toaster, your home or life may depend on it!

Install a smoke detector in or near your kitchen area. Smoke detectors are wonderful tools to help detect fire and save lives. Smoke detectors are readily available at any home improvement store. Be sure to follow manufactures instructions for installing your unit, keep the unit maintained, and keep fresh batteries in your smoke detectors.

When dealing with fire safety in your kitchen, you will want to have a fire extinguisher handy. Make sure that your fire extinguisher is designed to handle kitchen fires. These are marked with a black hexagon, pictures of a burning pan, and are a class K. Remember, K is for kitchen. This means that the fire extinguisher is good for handling fires caused by burning oils and fats. Make sure to store your fire extinguisher in a handy spot so that it is easy to get to. Also, keep your fire extinguisher properly maintained for maximum performance.

When dealing with fire safety in any area of your home, not just the kitchen, make sure to have an escape route in place. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Plan an escape route for your family, select a meeting place well away from the home, and practice with a fire drill. Make sure that everyone knows what their roll should be in case of a fire outbreak.

A fire in the home can be a devastating experience. However, if you practice good fire safety, this is one tragedy that you and your family can possibly protect yourselves against. The down side is that even if you are careful, a fire can still occur. Keep tools in place to help you control a fire and minimize damage to your home, but do not attempt to be the hero. Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and practicing good fire safety are excellent, but they all are tools for dealing with a small fire. If a fire gets out of hand, or is not easily controlled by these tools, use your planned escape route, and call the professionals. Be sure to keep emergency numbers posted by your phone.

Your kitchen should be a place of enjoyment. Family meals, entertainment, you name it; all take place in your kitchen. Be safe while in your kitchen. Install the smoke detectors, get the fire extinguisher, and make sure everyone in your family knows how to deal with a fire in your home. Remember, the few minutes you take now to ensure a safe environment can save your life and keep you from losing your home to fire. Fire safety is not just a suggestion; fire safety should be a way of life.

There are many resources available to get educated on ways to fire proof your kitchen and home. Take advantage of these. Also, your local fire department will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have about fire safety in your home. Your local fire department will even check your smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers to make sure that they are in proper working order.
