Fire Safety for Kids

Fire is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Every year, many people are killed or injured due to fires that occur in the home. With a little work, you can make your house safer and less likely to have a fire.

First, never put your clothing on a lamp, even for short periods of time. It is very easy for clothes to catch fire and it can spread quickly. Keep clothes and other objects away from heaters as well. Never touch a heater; have your parents turn it off and on for you.
If you have a fireplace in your home, never go too close to it. You could get burned or your clothing could catch fire. Also, never touch matches, lighters, or candles. If you ever see them in an area that is easy to get to, be sure to tell an adult right away.

If your parents allow you to cook, don’t do it without their permission. Even if they let you cook once before, that doesn’t mean you can do it whenever you wish. If you have their permission, make sure they are nearby in case there is an accident. Keep pot handles facing away from you. This way it is unlikely that you will be able to knock them over by accident.

Electrical cords are also dangerous and can cause fires. Therefore, never play with them. Also, never stick anything in an electrical socket. This can cause fires and my shock you as well. Always turn off your radios, TVs, lights, and anything else that uses electricity. When things are left turned on unattended, there is always that chance that they may catch fire.

Make sure your parents are always safe and try their best to prevent fires. You can help by reminding them whenever there is a situation that you know can start a fire. Ask your parents if you have an escape plan in case of fire or other emergency. This will help you know the fastest way out of your home and give you a place to meet up afterwards. Never go back into a burning house, no matter what you’ve left inside.

Make sure your room and other rooms of your home have smoke alarms. There could be a fire in your room or in your house and you’d never know about it if you were asleep. That is why it is always good to have a smoke alarm in your room. If ever there’s a fire, the smoke will set off the alarm and it will beep loud enough to wake you up. Your parents are busy so make sure they remember to check the batteries on your smoke alarms.

Summer time gives you a lot more opportunities to be fire safe, so keep the following in mind. Never play too close to grills or campfires. If your parents build a campfire, make sure there is water nearby to put it out. It is very easy for your clothing to catch fire. Never play with fireworks or firecrackers if your parents have them. They are dangerous and best left to your parents.
